Frank Furedi (English: "Putting the human back into humanism") verteidigt in NOVO 86 einen neuen Humanismus:
Der Bau von Wasserkraftwerken gilt heute als Akt wahrhaft prometheischer Hybris. Menschen, die neue Lösungen suchen und zum Beispiel im Bereich der Medizintechnik zu diesem Zweck Experimente vornehmen, werden bezichtigt, Gott spielen zu wollen. Die Desavouierung des Fortschritts enthält eine klare Botschaft: Wir sollen uns nicht anmaßen, ambitionierte Erwartungen an uns selbst zu hegen oder gar Geschichte machen zu wollen.
Die Entfremdung von der Idee des Fortschritts ist einer der bedauerlichsten Aspekte des Niedergangs der Ideale der Aufklärung.
Humans’ attempts to control our destinies are dismissed as exercises in Promethean arrogance. Those who search for new solutions and engage in experimentation are castigated for Playing God. Others seek to restrain scientific investigation in case it opens up a Pandora’s Box. Implicitly, the condemnation of the idea of progress contains a warning against any aspiration for making or changing history. In a roundabout way, we are being told to accept our Fate.
This reaction against the idea of progress is one of the most unfortunate consequences of the declining influence of Enlightenment thinking.
